Terms of reference for the recruitment of a Culinary Arts Trainer

1. Background 

Maison Shalom is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1993 in Ruyigi, Burundi, by Mrs. Marguerite Barankitse, to meet the needs of populations in distress in a conflict and post-conflict context. 

Since 2015, it has been registered in Rwanda to support the efforts of other actors who share the same values ​​of dignity and compassion, particularly towards vulnerable people. 

Maison Shalom operates in a variety of areas, including education, economic support, and psychosocial support, within a humanitarian framework aimed at strengthening community capacity. It provides a multi-sectoral response to displaced persons and/or refugees, returnees, and host populations. 

The main area of ​​intervention is Mahama camp, located in Kirehe district. 

As part of the  Education Support Program , in addition to supporting primary, secondary and university students, Maison Shalom implements a vocational training component including several career paths, such as culinary arts, food & beverage, carpentry and shoemaking. 

It is in this context that Maison Shalom wishes to recruit  a Culinary Arts Trainer  , in order to guarantee quality professional training, adapted to the needs of the beneficiaries. 

2. Purpose of the position 

Under the supervision of the Head of the Education Program, the Culinary Arts Trainer’s main mission will be to transmit to learners the theoretical and practical skills necessary for culinary professions, in accordance with professional standards. 

He/She will ensure the development of learners’ autonomy, creativity and technical rigor, while providing educational support adapted to their needs. 

The mission will cover a period of six (6) months of continuous training without interruption, followed by supervision of practical training over a period of two (2) months.

3. Main responsibilities 

Without being exhaustive, the main responsibilities are as follows: 

  • To impart technical and practical cooking skills: introduction to culinary basics, improvement of advanced techniques, demonstration of cooking methods, preparation and presentation of dishes. 
  • Prepare and lead theoretical and practical courses according to a defined program: design of training programs, development of teaching materials, implementation of appropriate teaching methods. 
  • Supervise and support learners: personalized monitoring, continuous assessment of skills, encouragement of discipline, rigor and professional spirit. 
  • Adapt teaching methods to different levels and learning profiles. 
  • Ensure the safety, hygiene and maintenance of kitchen equipment and facilities. 

4. Qualifications and skills required 

A. Training and experience

  • University diploma in Culinary Arts (A0 or Master). 
  • Proven experience in the field of professional cooking. ∙ Experience in training and/or supervising learners. 
  • Excellent mastery of classic and modern culinary techniques.
  •  Good knowledge of professional kitchen equipment and tools. ∙ Fluency in Kinyarwanda and English (oral and written). 

B. Desirable skills 

  • Experience working with a humanitarian NGO or in the hospitality sector. 
  • Ability to work in a team and by objectives. 

C. Behavioral skills

  • Adaptability to learner rhythms and profiles. 
  • Ability to convey instructions well.
  •  Collaborative spirit and sense of mutual aid. 
  • Professional ethics. 
  • Discipline and rigor.
